As a community school we strive to be an active part of our community and not just a building existing within it. We have strong links with our local schools, Shakespeare Infants, Shakespeare Junior and Crescent Primary and we work hard to develop Family Learning programmes, Centre activities and links with community groups, local businesses and the school.

As the college received Business and Enterprise status in 2005, the community team has worked hard to support the school in its development of enterprise education and the entrepreneurial qualities needed to succeed in the very competitive world of work today. This spirit is also reaching out to the community as we work to strengthen links and partnerships with local groups and agencies. We continue to communicate with our local community to develop activities that meet their need. At the same time we acknowledge the importance of our resources on site and are keen to develop these making them accessible for community use. On site we have a Pre
School Group and After School Club and the school is used by a variety
of community groups for sport, recreational and educational purposes. The community team also takes part in curriculum initiatives and the Community sub-group of the Student Council works hard to build relationships and partnerships as part of the government’s extended schools initiatives. The sub-group is keen to encourage the community into the school either by joint participation in social events or through attendance on either vocation or non-vocational courses such as basic ICT. Our After School Club is extremely successful, through the dedication and hard work of its staff. In October 2006 the club won awards for its long term achievements and also awards which were nominated by both parents and children attending the club. The clubs provides an invaluable resource for working parents –children are collected from school – either by car or on foot – and upon arrival are given a healthy light tea. They are then engaged in a variety of activities or they are free to do their homework. The children are encouraged to build relationships with both their peers and adults. In fact the club is one of the only clubs in the county to employ a male supervisor! Children between the ages of 4-13 can attend the club but we currently have two children above this age who still attend! The community hall and lounge are available for private hire for parties etc. and the rates of hire are extremely competitive. Our facilities are used by a number of local sporting clubs as a base for their meetings. Further information regarding any of the above can be obtained by contacting the community office on 02380 645500. |
